Can Chiropractic Treatment Help Lower Blood Pressure? (2025 Update)
Is your blood pressure silently creeping up? You are not alone.
In the few years since we last wrote about this topic, the statistics have shifted—and not for the better. The CDC now estimates that nearly half of all adults in the United States (approx. 119 million) have hypertension, or are taking medication for it.
What is even more concerning is that only about 1 in 4 of those people have their condition under control.
High blood pressure is often called the “silent killer” because it rarely shows symptoms until significant damage has been done. While medication is a lifesaver for many, patients are increasingly looking for ways to manage the root cause of their blood pressure issues rather than just managing the numbers.
Here is what we know about the link between chiropractic care and heart health in 2025.
What is Hypertension? (New Guidelines)
Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of your arteries. Since our last update, the medical guidelines for what constitutes “high” blood pressure have become stricter. Doctors now intervene earlier to prevent long-term damage.
- Normal: Less than 120/80 mm Hg
- Elevated: Systolic between 120-129 AND diastolic less than 80
- Stage 1 Hypertension: 130-139 OR 80-89
- Stage 2 Hypertension: 140 or higher OR 90 or higher
Note: If your blood pressure is higher than 180/120, this is a hypertensive crisis. Please seek emergency medical care immediately.
The “Atlas” Connection: How Your Neck Affects Your Heart
It might seem strange to visit a chiropractor for a heart issue. However, your spine—specifically the very top vertebrae in your neck—plays a crucial role in how your brain communicates with the rest of your body.
The Atlas vertebra (C-1) sits at the very top of your spine, right at the base of the skull. It protects the brainstem, which is the “control center” for many automatic body functions, including heart rate and blood pressure regulation.
If this vertebra is misaligned (subluxated) due to bad posture, an old car accident, or “tech neck,” it can put subtle pressure on the brainstem. This interference can essentially “glitch” the signal, causing the body to remain in a sympathetic “fight or flight” state, which naturally raises blood pressure.
What Does the Research Say?
One of the most significant studies on this topic was published in the Journal of Human Hypertension. The study found that a specialized chiropractic adjustment to the Atlas vertebra resulted in a significant drop in blood pressure for patients with stage 1 hypertension.
The results were so profound that the study authors noted the drop was similar to the effect of taking two different blood pressure medications simultaneously.
While chiropractic care is not a replacement for prescribed heart medication, studies like this highlight why checking your spinal alignment should be part of your overall wellness plan.
A Whole-Body Approach for 2025
At Dr. Keren Gomez’s clinics, we believe in treating the whole person. If you are struggling with blood pressure, we recommend a combined approach:
- Check Your Spine: Let us assess if a cervical misalignment is contributing to your stress response.
- Watch Your Posture: In 2025, we spend more time looking down at screens than ever before. This “forward head posture” puts immense strain on the Atlas vertebra.
- Lifestyle Factors: We continue to advocate for limiting sodium, managing stress, and staying active.
